Solar – Relating to or determined by the Sun.
Present – In a particular place; Existing or occurring now; A gift.
Solar Present is inspired by the moments when the sun seems to touch the earth as it enters and exits the east and west horizons. Proportion, shape, orientation, and the elements come together to connect the portal’s dimensions with other spheres in our solar system and visitors to the artwork.
A portal to Masdar City, the installation consists of three sculptures made of rammed earth harvested from, on, or near the site. Each sculpture corresponds to a moment of the sun’s trajectory around earth.
On the sunrise side is a sculpture dedicated to water desalination using direct solar thermal energy. The desalinated water is used for site irrigation and to provide a cooling mist throughout the portal.
The center sculpture is an elliptical underground breezeway providing shaded gathering areas throughout the day while connecting the eastern and western parts of the site. On the sunset side is the “sun sculpture,” a rammed earth spherical quadrant oriented to maximize solar exposure to monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic modules arranged in a Fibonacci spiral. Visitors gather in the cool shaded spaces below, gently misted during hot days, and safely removed from the power electronics, which are housed within the form.
LAGI 2019 is sponsored by Masdar and is held in partnership with the 24th World Energy Congress.
