{"id":992,"date":"2010-09-13T20:56:46","date_gmt":"2010-09-13T16:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/?p=992"},"modified":"2010-09-20T11:11:55","modified_gmt":"2010-09-20T07:11:55","slug":"beach-ball","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/archives\/992","title":{"rendered":"Beach Ball"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Tony Leung<\/strong><br \/>\nDesigned for Site #2 in Abu Dhabi, between Saadiyat Island and Yas Island.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/bb1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<small>Design Submission for the 2010 Land Art Generator Initiative Design Competition<\/small><\/p>\n<p><em>Artist&#8217;s descriptive text:<\/em><br \/>\nConcept<br \/>\nThese inflatable &#8216;beach balls&#8217; not only serve as containers for PV films but also an installation interacting with wind, topography and visitors. <\/p>\n<p>Photovoltaic<br \/>\nWhen inflated, the ball is temporarily stabilized by the counterweighted bottom cap. The PV films that weaved into a stretched membrane is tilted at 25 degrees from the horizon within the stabilized section, which provides better efficiency according to the latitude angle of Dubai (25\u00b0 N).<\/p>\n<p>When deflated, the tile angle of PV films will be zero.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/bb2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Output<br \/>\nEach film contains 3\u33a1 of PV cells film which gives a maximum output of 200W approximately.<\/p>\n<p>Material<br \/>\nEach clear latex &#8216;beach ball&#8217; measures 2m in diameter. Alternatively, ETFE foil that allows better light penetration could be tested.<\/p>\n<p>Base cap<br \/>\nThe base cap contains LED lighting, air valve and silicon cable connectors which provides flexible cable movement. Each unit is color coded to match the color cap of  &#8216;base station&#8217; and should be carefully weighted to offset the weight of PV films above.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/bb3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Night view<br \/>\nAt night, these \u2018beach balls\u2019 will be illuminated by LED lighting installed on each base cap, producing a moving lightscape along the highway.<\/p>\n<p>Base Station<br \/>\nEach base station is equipped with air pump, inverter and battery.<\/p>\n<p>These stainless steel units are buried 1m underground to provide anchors for five to six &#8216;beach balls&#8217; and to convert electricity from DC to AC for storage or transmission to electric grid.<\/p>\n<p>A 8m cable containing air and electric conduits is connected to each beach ball.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/bb4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Site impact<br \/>\nConsider the sandy and loose soil condition, the proposal is easy to install, remove and highly expandable.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/bb5.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/beachball.pdf\" target=\"blank\">low-res version PDF of submitted boards<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tony Leung Designed for Site #2 in Abu Dhabi, between Saadiyat Island and Yas Island.
