We&#8217;ve recently come across a few innovations like the work being done at the University of Oxford (Kepler THAWT pictured above).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seageneration.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/s1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"s1\" width=\"500\" height=\"175\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5223\" \/> <\/a><br \/>\n<small>Seagen&#8217;s 1.2 MW <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seageneration.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tidal Energy Converter<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/designcomp\/downloads\/LAGI2016-DesignGuidelines.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">The LAGI 2016 design site<\/a> offers an opportunity for participants to think about tidal energy technologies, their form, and their relationship to space, both above and below the surface of the water. What is the ecological impact of their addition to the sea bed?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"349\" src=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/t1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"t1\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5225\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/t2.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"t2\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5225\" \/><br \/>\n<small><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tidalstream.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tidal Stream<\/a> Titan 1-3MW<\/small><\/p>\n<p>The two major taxonomies are those that employ tidal barrage (dams) and those that catch the free-flowing tidal stream. Tidal stream type generators work very much like wind turbines, but because water is denser than air, the potential power per swept area is great.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.southwales-eveningpost.co.uk\/Green-light-given-1-billion-Swansea-Bay-tidal\/story-26664597-detail\/story.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/landartgenerator.org\/blagi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/S1.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"S1\" width=\"500\" height=\"277\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5228\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Section through the proposed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tidallagoonswanseabay.com\/\" target=\"blank\">Swansea Tidal Lagoon<\/a>.<br \/><b>Check out the work that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capefarewell.com\/latest\/projects\/tidal-lagoon.html\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Farewell<\/a> is doing at Swansea.<\/b><\/small><\/p>\n<p>Barrage type tidal generators&mdash;like the proposed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tidallagoonswanseabay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Swansea Tidal Lagoon<\/a> in Wales&mdash;tend to benefit from a sizable difference between low and high tides.
